The Town of Oakville is permitting night fishing at its piers starting late summer, after approving a pilot program during a council meeting. The program allows fishing from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. between Aug. 1 and Oct. 15 at designated areas of the east pier in Bronte and the east/west piers in Oakville. This pilot project is an attempt to balance public safety with the increased interest in recreational fishing that emerged during the pandemic. Fishing restrictions were eased in 2021, allowing for additional spring and fall fishing opportunities. The night fishing period coincides with the salmon run, and staff will report the results of the pilot to council in the first quarter of 2024. Signs will be posted to inform the public of the designated night fishing areas, with fishing remaining restricted in other waterfront parks and harbours.
